The postponed Phoenix Division race was run in conjunction with the Sonoma Division race during qualifying. For the Phoenix race we ended up qualifying in the #6 position with a 5.715 @ 253.37 mph and because some competitors did not return for the make up race we were matched up with #1 qualifier Sean O’Bannon in the first round. He still ran the car through with a slightly quicker 5.670 @ 252.85 mph The finals paired Mark with Steve Gasparrelli. Mark cut a .081 light to Steve’s .065 and even though he improved to a 5.660 @254,18mph, it has not enough to hold off the 5.600 that Gasparrelli ran and ended up runner up for the Phoenix race. They left virtually together with Doug cutting a .042 light to Mark's .045, but the race was over early as Doug’s car shook & smoked the tires early in the run. Mark went on to improve from his qualifying time with a 5.656 @ 255.15mph to take the win light. In the 2nd round Mark once again faced Sean O’Bannon’s Monte Carlo who had just run a 5.57 in the previous round. Mark had a slight hole shot advantage with a .050 light to Sean’s .069 and they were almost even at the 60’ clocks. By the time they reached the 330 ‘ cone Sean’s car was shaking and Mark drove by to take the win with a 5.682 @ 253.80 to a 5.901 @ 251.49. Mark’s Final round opponent was John Lombardo in his NAPA Monte Carlo. We had lost lane choice when John had run a 5.669 in the previous round to defeat Steve Gasparrelli. We knew this race would be decided at the starting line as both cars had been consistently quick all weekend. Mark did his job and cut a .061 light to John’s .124 giving Mark the Hole shot win with a 5.656 @ 255.77 to John’s losing 5.638 @ 258.81 losing effort.
